Breakcore is composed using complex rhythmical techniques overlaid with simplistic melodic phrases and harmonic development; this combination has the unfortunate tendency to simultaneously stimulate and bore. Whelan’s 384 page Breakcore study makes scant reference to either melody or harmony. When they are mentioned in the study, Toynbee comments that both are afforded ‘low salience’ by composers.
