一九二二年,当毛姆作为剧作家、短篇及长篇小说家甚至社交名流均取得巨大成功之际,他将这些全部放下,远赴东南亚进行了一次长途而且相当艰苦的旅行。从英国坐船到锡兰,在那儿他听说了缅甸东北部掸邦偏远的景栋之诸多乐事,于是他经仰光去到曼德勒,在那儿骑上骡子,走了整整二十六天前往这个令人着迷的地方;然后一路跋涉到泰国边境,来到曼谷,又坐船去了柬埔寨,徒步来到吴哥,最后乘河船去西贡,沿着海岸经顺化到了河内。毛姆在逆伊洛瓦底江往蒲甘的船上偶然读到赫兹里特《论旅行》中的一段话:"妙哉!挣脱俗世与舆论羁绊——把我等那苦苦纠缠、令人烦恼、没完没了的自我身份丢于自然之中,做个当下之人,清除所有累赘——只凭一碟杂碎维系万物,除了晚上的酒债,什么也不亏欠——不再寻求喝彩并遭逢鄙视,仅以客厅里的绅士这一名衔为人所知!"顿如醍醐灌顶,遂决定写这样一本游记,并以"客厅里的绅士"为其书名。可是直到七年之后,他才真正提笔写成此书,并在"序言"中坦承:"本书不像《在中国屏风上》乃意外所获。书中记述的旅行为我所愿;但我起初就有意将之成书。《在中国屏风上》我写得开心。同类题材我想再试手艺,但规模要更精细,并采用一种我能赋予明确模式的形式。这是风格的演练。"(In 1922, when Maugham became the playwright, novelist of short and long novels and even socialite as well as achieved great success, he put all these down and went to Southeast Asia to have a long-distance and very difficult trip.
