To gain knowledge of the environment at gas pressures below lo-' torr in which many industrial and research processes are carried out, the gas is ionized in the vacuum gauges generally employed, and the pressure recorded in terms of the ion current between specific electrodes. Increasingly, there is also a demand to identify the various gas constituents and to determine their partial pressures. Accurate information is not easily obtained because of the reactions of the gauge with the gaseous environment, and the gas molecules may be subject to streaming.
