An approximate expression for determining the elastic longitudinal stress field in the neighbourhood of notches is presented. The approach is based on similarities between elastic stress fields described by two parameters; the stress concentration factor Kt and the notch-tip radius p. The proposed expression gives a better estimation of elastic stress distribution for wide ranges of notch configurations and geometries than currently available approximate relations.
