An accurately wound coil is the key component to eliminate transformer failures in the field. Therefore choosing correct mandrel is the first important step in coil winding process. The mandrel design is dependent on shape of the composite part to be produced and removal of the mandrel after curing. In the present paper an empirical study was conducted to study mandrel design and its mechanism. It also includes a thorough investigation of various US patents on expandable and collapsible winding mandrel
