Spencerian script is a cursive handwriting style based on Copperplate, used in the U.S. from 1850 to 1925 as the standard for business correspondence. It was widely taught in schools until the Palmer Method took its place. President James A. Garfield praised Spencerian script as a source of national pride and a model for education.
