What is American Bison Population Timeline about?
The American bison population declined dramatically from approximately 30-60 million in the 1500s to only 325 wild bison in 1884 due to westward expansion, habitat changes, market hunting, and commercial overhunting. Several attempts were made through the late 1800s to pass legislation protecting bison, but enforcement was lacking. Early conservation efforts to establish captive herds for recovery began in the 1860s-1870s, but the wild population remained very low with only around 1,000 bison total by 1889
