The Khilafat Movement was founded to protest the British and French plans to punish Turkey after World War 1 for supporting Germany. It aimed to protect the Caliphate and Ottoman Empire. Gandhi initially supported the movement to unite Hindus and Muslims against the British, but withdrew support after violence increased. The mass migration of Muslims to Afghanistan in 1920 was a failure and contributed to the movement losing momentum, as did leaders being imprisoned in 1921. The movement ultimately ended in
