About this document

Glucocorticoid Hormone Overview by Alen Osmanovic is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Cortisol is a steroid hormone released by the adrenal cortex in response to stressors and circadian rhythm. It stimulates gluconeogenesis and breaks down stored proteins and fats to provide energy and building blocks. Rising cortisol levels provide negative feedback at the hypothalamus and pituitary to shut off further cortisol production. Hypersecretion of cortisol due to a pituitary tumor can cause high blood glucose, loss of proteins and bone density, and hypertension.
