What is André Breton about?

The poem describes a sleepless city where no one can sleep. Strange creatures prowl about at night, and even the dead cannot rest. The living suffer without relief, as those marked by pain carry it with them always. The poem warns the reader to be careful, as life offers no escape or oblivion, only reality and enduring sensation. It envisions a strange future landscape and urges that anyone seen sleeping must be whipped to remain awake and aware of the pains and wounds of existence.
