What is Glucocorticoid-inducible expression of a bacterial avirulence gene in transgenic Arabidopsis induces hypersensitive cell death about?

## Summary Pathogenic strains of __Pseudomonas syringae__ pv. tomato carrying the __avrRpt2__ avirulence gene specifically induce a hypersensitive cell death response in __Arabidopsis__ plants that contain the complementary __RPS2__ disease resistance gene. Transient expression of __avrRpt2__ in __Arabidopsis__ plants having the __RPS2__ gene has been shown to induce hypersensitive cell death. In order to analyze the effects of conditional expression of __avrRpt2__ in __Arabidopsis__ plants, transgenic lines were constructed that contained the __avrRpt2__ gene under the control of a tightly regulated, glucocorticoid‐inducible promoter. Dexamethasone‐induced expression of __avrRpt2__ in transgenic lines having the __RPS2__ gene resulted in a specific hypersensitive cell death response that resembled a __Pseudomonas syringae__‐induced hypersensitive response and also induced the expression of a pathogenesis‐related gene (__PR1__). Interestingly, high level expression of __avrRpt2__ in a mutant __rps2–__101C background resulted in plant stress and ultimately cell death, suggesting a possible role for __avrRpt2__ in __Pseudomonas syringae__ virulence. Transgenic __RPS2__ and __rps2__ p
