This story describes racial discrimination experienced by a woman named Desiree and her family in the late 19th century. Desiree married a man named Armand who loved her until their child was born with dark skin. Armand then rejected and abandoned Desiree and the child, assuming falsely that Desiree had betrayed him, when in fact Armand had a black ancestor himself. Desiree was forced to leave home with her child after Armand refused to acknowledge or support them further.
