EPISTIGMIN is a cholineesterase inhibitor that prolongs the effects of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions. It is indicated for the diagnosis and treatment of myasthenia gravis, prevention of postoperative ileus and urinary retention, and reversal of neuromuscular blockade. Common side effects are due to excessive cholinergic stimulation and include nausea, vomiting, increased salivation, and diarrhea. It should be used cautiously in patients with certain medical conditions and during pregnancy.
