This study evaluated the effects of two voluntary swallowing maneuvers (Mendelsohn maneuver and effortful swallowing) on esophageal physiology compared to normal swallowing. Healthy volunteers underwent high-resolution manometry while performing the maneuvers with and without a 5 ml bolus. The Mendelsohn maneuver resulted in more non-peristaltic swallows and higher intrabolus pressure than normal swallowing.
