The helminth parasites of the lesser flamingo, Phoeniconaias minor (Geoffroy), from Lake Nakuru, Kenya, including a new cestode, Phoenicolepis nakurensis n.g., n.sp. by Arlene Jones; L.F. Khalil is a Environmental Science article available to read on EtoBox.
What is The helminth parasites of the lesser flamingo, Phoeniconaias minor (Geoffroy), from Lake Nakuru, Kenya, including a new cestode, Phoenicolepis nakurensis n.g., n.sp. about?
## Phoenicolepis nakurensis n.g., n.sp. (Hymenolepididae) is characterized by the size and shape of the hooks, scolex and strobila, structure of the terminal genital ducts, presence of an accessory sac, external seminal vesicle and stylet, and absence of an internal seminal vesicle. Gynandrotaenia stammeri, Cladogynia phoeniconaiadis, Flamingolepis tengizi, F. dolguschini and Striatofilaria phoenicopteri are redescribed; all except C. phoeniconaiadis are new for this host and for Kenya. nary Investigational Laboratory and the bodies of two others were retrieved from marabou storks. Cestodes and nematodes recovered from the intestine post mortem, and one nematode species from under the skins were fixed and preserved in alcohol and sent to the Commonwealth Institute of Helminthology for identification. Whole mount preparations were stained in aceto alum carmine and serial sections in haematoxylin and eosin. Hooks and spines were examined and measured in Berlese fluid. Nematodes were cleared in lactic acid and some were stained in Horen's trichrome. Scanning electron microscope examinations were carried out using the critical point drying technique for preparation.
