What is Plaque Volume Measurements in the Carotid Arteries Using a Magnetic Sensor System about?
Purpose: Traditionally, ultrasound contrast agents are administered as a bolus providing phasic, rapidly rising and slowly decreasing enhancement, over 2-6 min. The purpose of this study was to investigate if a continuous infusion over 15 min can provide prolonged enhancement at a constant level. Materials and Methods: Preparations of Levovist (300 mg/ml and 400 mg/ml; Schering, Germany) were used. Six volunteers each received one bolus and three infusions over 4-15 min at: (1) a 'standard' rate, calculated individually for each subject (1.8 -2.4 ml/min); (2) a 'fast' rate at twice the 'standard' rate; (3) a 'slow' rate at half the 'standard' rate. The left femoral artery (spectral-Doppler) and right carotid (colour-Doppler) were scanned simultaneously. The gain control was set artificially low to mimic sub-optimal scanning conditions. Doppler intensitometry of spectral traces and subjective analysis of spectral traces and colour-Doppler US were performed for all boli and infusions. Results: All infusions provided prolonged enhancement, with a uniform plateau phase starting after 0.5-2.5 min and lasting until after the end of the infusion. Depending on the infusion rate, enhancemen
