## I. GENERAL B. 0. Unbegaun's admirable essay, 'Le russe litteraire est-il d'origine russe ?', RSl, xliv, is the distillation of a lifetime's study bearing on this fundamental question. One after another the vital points are stated with Gallic concision and clarity. The Dark Age 1650-1750, we must agree, saw no break in continuity, requiring a fresh basis for the modern literary language. This article does not aim at •a full analysis of the connecting threads. More important is the principle of change, namely the spirit of secularization, accelerated but no doubt not wholly initiated by foreign influences. The intellectual revolution, upon which the linguistic depends, may be clearly illustrated by comparing the poems of Simeon Polotski (d. I 68o), who attempted the impossiblethe writing of secular poetry in Church Slavonicand the French-inspired satires of Antiokh Kantemir, written in the I 730's in a tentatively new style. The nadir ofliterary standards falls squarely in the reign of Peter the Great, when all direction was lost.
