She attends a ball hosted by the Ministry of Education and borrows an expensive diamond necklace to fit in with the upper-class guests. However, she loses the necklace after the ball. To replace it, she and her husband work for ten years to pay off their debt without telling anyone about the lost necklace. In the end, they find and return the original necklace to its owner, who was unaware it had ever been lost.
