What is Role of Theory in Research Methodology about?

This document discusses the role and types of theory in research. It outlines three ways theory can be used: 1) to underpin research design, 2) to inform understanding of the phenomenon under investigation, and 3) to emerge from the study as new knowledge. The document also discusses theory as a paradigm that shapes research methodology and methods, and as a "lens" to explain social phenomena. Finally, it contrasts quantitative and qualitative research models and the role of conceptual frameworks.
