Abstract: Practical guidance is provided for trainers and operating managers to develop supervisory skills in new supervisors. The presentation is equally appropriate for male and female suupervisors. Following a discussion of areas in which the new supervisor may require training, descriptions are given of the substantive subjects (procedural and interpersonal) and vehicular subjects (problem solving, decision-making, interviewing, job organization) that comprise the new supervisor's responsibilities. Substantitive topics include: output and maintenance of machinery and equipment; cost and quality control; employee safety, health, utilization, and compensation; labor relations; and skills and induction training. Discussion of vehicular subjects covers specific types of problems and communications skills. Major emphasis is placed on developing and sustaining motivation of the new supervisor; the specifics in establishing a meaningful training program; assessing supervisory performance (employing the principles of management by objectives); and putting training into practice.
