What is Timmis, Ivor: Historical Spoken Language Research: Corpus Perspectives about?
This book aims to discuss "continuity (and change) in spoken grammar" and "the factors which appear to sustain certain vernacular grammatical forms for centuries" (p. 1, emphasis original). These aims clearly target a research gap. As the author points out, scholars examining vernacular varieties tend to focus on phonology rather than grammar, and scholars examining grammar tend to avoid non-standard material. In addition, one might note something of a tendency, until relatively recently, on the part of grammarians to avoid spoken language. The additional point of interest this author brings is a historical perspective. Thus far, the book promises to be innovative, but not strikingly original. I might think of my own work here with Merja Kytö on Early Modern English dialogues, which includes work on grammatical features, and in an era before standardization, or the notable work by Helsinki scholars, especially Terttu Nevalainen. What makes this book unique is the period under scrutiny: 1850 to 1940. This is the first empirically grounded book to discuss vernacular spoken grammar and issues of continuity and change across that period. Of course, such a book is not going to be "just"
