The United Nations was formed in 1945 to replace the League of Nations and promote international cooperation. Key events in its formation included the 1944 Dumbarton Oaks Conference and the 1945 UN Charter drafting conference in San Francisco. The UN officially began operations in 1945 with the ratification of the Charter by over half of the original 51 member states. Its main organs are the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, International Court of Justice, and Secretariat.
