What is RGF Protection for Autotransformers Explained about?
Restricted ground fault (RGF) protection can be applied to autotransformers. The RGF element sums the residual current from the phase CTs and the ground CT current. During internal faults, these currents will not sum to zero, allowing the RGF element to operate. During external faults or normal operation, the currents will sum to zero and the RGF element will not operate. The time delay setting allows the RGF element to ride through transient conditions like CT saturation during external faults.
