The Gorton Castle building in Shimla was originally owned by Mr. Gorton in 1840 and later purchased by the Imperial Government of India in 1900 to house the Civil Secretariat office. Designed by Sir Swinton Jacob and built from 1901 to 1904, it suffered a major fire in January 2014 that gutted the top two floors.
