What is Macroencapsulated Cu Si phase change material by in situ alloying formation for high temperature thermal energy storage over 800 °C about?

In this study, macro-encapsulated CuSi phase change materials (PCMs) by in situ alloying formation were successfully prepared for high temperature thermal energy storage. Cu and Si powders were mixed to obtain uniform CuSi powders, which were spherulitized into millimeter-size balls. The core balls were cladded with Al2O3 shells, and after the two-step sintering treatment, the Cu-Si@Al2O3 macrocapsules were successfully fabricated. Cu and Si powders were in situ smelted to form the CuSi alloys core PCM. The pores and gaps among the Cu and Si powders provided buffer spaces to accommodate the volume expansion of the PCM. The melting-solidification cycling test indicated that the CuSi macrocapsules were highly durable. The heat storage capacity of the capsules could be optimized by isostatic pressing to reduce excess cavities and by adding sintering aids to the Al2O3 shell to increase shell strength for forming larger size capsules with thinner shell thickness. The macrocapsules presented high heat storage capacity, for example, the Cu20Si, 9 mm@1 mm-150 MPa capsule showed high values of 816 MJ/m3 and 198 J/g at a temperature range of 750–850 °C. The superior phase change properties a
