Andreas Palaiologos was the eldest son of Thomas Palaiologos, the Despot of the Morea. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the Ottoman conquest of the Morea in 1460, Andreas and his family fled to Corfu and later Rome. As the eldest nephew of the last Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI, Andreas became the head of the Palaiologos family and claimant to the Byzantine throne. Throughout his life in poverty in Rome, Andreas attempted to rally support from European rulers to help him retake Constantinople
