Cold exposure impairs extracellular vesicle swarm-mediated nasal antiviral immunity Respiratory viruses typically initiate infection in the anterior nasal cavity, which is both the first site of contact for inhaled pathogens and sensitive to changes in ambient air temperature. Extracellular vesicle (EV) swarm-like behavior previously has been found to provide surveillance and defense mechanisms against inhaled bacteria in the nose. However, the EV-mediated innate immune response to respiratory viral infection and its susceptibility to temperature fluctuations remained unclear. In this issue, Huang et al (p 509) evaluated the antiviral function of nasal EVs against 3 common respiratory viruses. To investigate the effect of temperature on antiviral defense, they took healthy volunteers from a room temperature environment (23.38C) and exposed them to colder temperatures (4.48C). They measured the temperature drop inside the anterior nose, and applied the reduction in intranasal temperature to in vitro cultures.
