What is Christmas mumming in Newfoundland : essays in anthropology, folklore, and history about?
The practice of mumming or janneying is a world-wide phenomenon connected with religion, ritual and drama. Derived from the British and Irish customs now almost extinct, the Newfoundland mumming tradition, which is still a vital part of the islands culture, offers a unique opportunity for observing the practice. This study approached the living folk tradition from three directions. HERBERT HALPERT is the Head of the Department of Folklore at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada.
