What is The Hsiung-nu about?

The Hsiung-nu have been held to be the earliest known Turkish people. This is very doubtful but they were at any rate the first great imperial power of the eastern steppes of which we have record and, as such, they bequeathed to the later Turks, directly or indirectly, a great deal in the way of culture and political organization.The Hsiung-nu do not appear by that name before about 300 B.C. Chinese historians have long identified them with various northern und northwestern peoples known from earlier times -especially the Hun-yii, who are said to have troubled the predynastic kings of Chou in western Shensi towards the end of the second millennium B.C., and the Hsien-yiin, mentioned in the Book of the Odes and on bronze inscriptions for their attacks on the Western Chou dynasty around 780 B.C. There is, however, no real basis for assuming a connection except the vague similarity in the names. The connection made by later Chinese historians and sometimes still accepted today between the names Ti and Ti-li, a variant of Ting-ling or T'ieh-lo (see below), is also quite spurious.
