Quinoline is a heterocyclic aromatic compound consisting of a benzene ring fused to a pyridine ring. It can be prepared commercially via the Skraup synthesis which involves heating aniline and glycerol in sulfuric acid. Quinoline is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 237°C. It has basic properties and undergoes electrophilic substitution at the C-5 and C-8 positions as well as nucleophilic substitution at the C-2 position.
