Barium chloride dihydrate is an inorganic reagent with the molecular formula BaCl2 • 2H2O and molecular weight of 244.3. It is used in manufacturing pigments and glass, as a mordant for dyes, and in other industrial applications. Barium chloride has also been used in studies of ion channels in various cell types. It has been shown to enhance the yield of pertussis toxin from Bordetella pertussis in one fermentation study and been used to isolate ostrich prothrombin from plasma.
