Richard Sylvester was brought up without any religious creed by agnostic humanist parents. He had a brief period of interest in Christianity as a teenager but it did not last. As a young adult, he experimented with psychedelic drugs, Buddhist meditation, and yoga, before becoming intensely involved with Transcendental Meditation and following various gurus over several years.
