What is Rethinking Social Protection in Africa about?

This document summarizes a paper that critiques the dominant "social protection paradigm" approach to social policy in Africa. It argues that this paradigm promotes a narrow vision of social policy focused mainly on cash transfer programs, rather than a broader vision that integrates social and economic policy. The paradigm has been aggressively promoted by donors through funding but results in compromised claims about program impacts. It also fails to address the structural causes of poverty and inequality
