Aside from their general contribution to classical scholarship, the American excavations (1966 to present) at Murlo, near Siena in central Italy, have heightened the awareness of the public to the current status of Etruscan studies and emphasized the need to revise traditional attitudes regarding the importance of this pre-Roman civilization in the context of ancient Mediterranean cultures. Indeed, the theses of at least three of the papers in the present volume underscore the sentiment that Etruscan culture generally is viewed as peripheral and inferior to the contemporary Greek culture. Referring to the tradition of Demaratos, Ridgway and Ridgway conclude that the legend is indicative of the attitudes that have shaped our views of Etruscan culture, far beyond the scope of Demaratos and the situation in the seventh century B.C. (p. 13). In other words, a Hellenocentric view has to some degree been perpetuated in contemporary classical scholarship.
