The Birth of Venus by Botticelli is one of the most famous paintings in art history. It depicts the goddess Venus rising from the sea on a seashell, accompanied by gods Zephyrus and the Horae. The painting was inspired by classical mythology and Neoplatonic philosophy. It uses the beautiful female form of Venus to represent ideals of physical and intellectual love. The model for Venus was said to be Simonetta Cattaneo, a favorite of the Medici court, for whom the painting may have been commissioned.
