What is Caldo Largo about?

"The rough-hewn hero of CALDO LARGO is Johnny Hand-Korean War veteran, shrimpboat skipper, outrageous womanizer. Johnny thrives in the seething, exotic port city-he has his own boat, his independence, and good money when luck is with him. His time ashore is divided between hard drinking and erotic adventure. For Johnny, no two women are alike, they are all worth at least one chance, maybe a whole evening. Still he invariably returns to the fierce and unpredictable passion of Lupe Contrerras, who can stop traffic by merely walking down the street. Lupe introduces Johnny to the two strangers who have come to the docks seeking a skipper and boat for a gun run to Cuba. There, Fidel Castro is planning his triumphant drive to Havana. Before long Johnny finds out that shrimp fishing is one thing, arms smuggling quite another."--Jacket
