What is Marxism And Philosophy (marxist Introductions) about?
First published 1983. First issued as an Oxford University Press paperback 1985. Reprinted 1987, 1989Marxism began with the repudiation of philosophy. Marx declared: 'The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it.' Yet Marxists have often resorted to distinctively philosophical modes of reasoning, and Western Marxism has recently been more concerned with philosophy than with empirical research or political activity. This book explores the ambivalent attitude of Marxism to philosophy, starting with an examination of the Marxistview of Hegel. Marx wrote that Hegel was 'the last word of· all philosophy', and indeed such prominent Marxistphilosophers as Engels, Lukacs, Althusser, and Adorno have all been concerned to clarify the connections between the two men's thought. Alex Callinicos goes on to contrast German classical idealism, from which Marxist philosophy stems, with the very different tradition of analytical philosophy prevalent among English-speaking philosophers.
