This document examines formaldehyde release from cotton fabrics finished with dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) using standard and modified sealed jar tests. The modified test incubates samples at 20°C instead of 49°C to minimize hydrolytic degradation and better measure free formaldehyde. Results show the 20°C test releases 90% of free formaldehyde with little contribution from hydrolysis. Sequential tests provide insight into free versus hydrolytically released formaldehyde.
