South America is a continent located in the Western Hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Atlantic Ocean to the northeast, North America to the northwest, and the Southern Ocean to the southeast. South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi) and a population of more than 420 million people. The continent includes twelve sovereign states and two non-sovereign areas.
