What is Rivers: As Seen in Regeneration about?
W.H.R. Rivers, neurologist and psychiatrist, is probably best known for his association with the war poets, Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves, whom he met at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh where he was a psychiatrist with the Royal Army Medical Corps (as featured in Pat Barker's Regeneration triology, volume three of which, The Ghost Road won the Booker prize). This short life of Rivers looks at his earlier career in neurology and psychiatry and of the formative role he played in the treatment of shell-shock. He was director of the first two psychological laboratories in Britain and became engaged in important neurological research. In 1915, he joined Maghull Military Hospital, Lancashire as a psychiatrist, taking part in the study and treatment of combat trauma. The following year, he was posted to Craiglockhart and spent most of the rest of the war years there. After the war he befriended George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells and Arnold Bennett, and stood for Parliament but died suddenly just before the election in November 1922.
