The 1960s included the final years of regular steam working on British Railways. It was certainly a period of contrast. In the very early sixties steam locomotives still worked many principal express trains, all immaculate and in first-class mechanical condition. One of these, the non-stop workings between London and Edinburgh ('The Elizabethan') was still in the hands of King's Cross & Haymarket depot Gresley A4 Pacifics. All too soon, however, increasing numbers of diesel locomotives took over. In the Southern Region 'Bulleid Pacifics' worked express trains to the end, and many A4s from south of the border could still be seen enjoying a swan song working between Glasgow and Aberdeen, but elsewhere many once-proud locomotives were to find themselves on secondary services. By the mid-sixties whole areas had finished with steam, and steam graveyards grew to be a sadly common sight in many parts of the country. The most famous of these was at Barry, South Wales, where fortunately some were able to be preserved and later returned to operation.
