Friction stir welding (FSW) and bobbin tool friction stir welding (BTFSW) are commonly used for manufacturing, but they leave keyholes that FPW technology can repair effectively. FPW offers advantages such as low heat input and high mechanical properties, and has been successfully applied by Lockheed Martin for repairs on the space shuttle outer tank.
