What is History of the First Elevator about?
The earliest known reference to an elevator dates back to 236 BC, when the Roman architect Vitruvius reported that Archimedes built the first elevator. This first lift used animal or human power to operate, with ropes wound around a drum that was rotated by manpower applied to a winch. The ropes were used to hoist items by means of pulleys, with the force generated by humans, animals, or water wheels turning the winch.
