What is Mystery In The Apple Orchard; about?

Helen Fuller Orton was one of my favorite authors when I was a child. I read and loved many of her books, but I never caught up with Mystery in the Apple Orchard and I was pleased to find it as an adult. It is not one of Mrs. Orton's best books--I think Mystery at the Little Red Schoolhouse and Mystery in the Old Red Barn have that honor--but it is still an enjoyable story for children in the elementary grades. The orchard in the title is owned by the parents of Dee and Ronnie Waters, who love to play there with their friends Timmy and Arthur and Emily. An arrogant girl named Gloria "borrowed" an heirloom ring from her mother's jewelry box, lost it in the orchard, and accused Timmy of stealing it. The children wanted to find it to clear their friend's name. Their search took them into fascinating places, such as a crow's nest and a chipmunk's burrow, and they were assisted at times by two telephone linemen. Children will want to know where the ring is and how it got there, and they will love exploring the orchard with Dee and Ronnie and their friends.
