What is Novel Materials Based on Self-assembly of Organophosphonic Acids about?

We have identified two distinct types of molecular building blocks based on organophosphonic acids for the design of polymeric crown ether assemblies and three-dimensional open structures. The phosphorylated crown ethers, N-(phosphonomethyl)-aza-18crown-6 (1H 2 N) and N-(phosphonomethyl)-aza-15-crown-5 (2H 2 N) form one-dimensional polymeric arrays like 'leaflets' through hydrogen bonded and coordination bonded self-assembly. Nitrilotri(methylphosphonic acid) (3H 6 N) forms unique three-dimensional hexagonal structures when reacted with amines, 1,7-phenanthroline, 1,10-phenanthroline, acridine and tripropylamine in 1:1 molar ratio. Monodeprotonation of 3H 6 N in these complexes triggers a prototypal self-complementary 3D hexagonal architecture. The structural features of 1:1 and 1:1.5 complexes of acid 3H 6 N with acridine reveal the importance of template effects in stabilizing the three-dimensionally hydrogen bonded open structures.
