This study investigated the characteristics of echoes from planar defects in steel structures using ultrasonic testing with the angle beam technique. Numerical simulations and experiments were conducted to examine: 1) The relationship between surface breaking notch length and echo height, finding echo height is proportional to the square root of notch length. 2) Amplitude profile scans of surface notches, which showed the highest echoes were obtained using a 5MHz focused probe producing a sharp profile.
