What is Climate Negotiations about?

Despite our hopes to the contrary, the most significant climate accord yet devised by humanity is nonetheless unlikely to spare us from a future climate reckoning. The Paris Agreement is a magnificent piece of statecraft that tries valiantly to achieve the impossible. It seeks to beguile the living into making tangible sacrifices on behalf of the unborn and to shame the developed world into subsidizing the energy transition for the less developed. It is perhaps the best structure that can be hoped for at this time, and yet still woefully inadequate for its task. Moreover, while it appears to have evaded infant mortality via an early US exit, it will remain vulnerable to future American scuttling until such time as it is embraced by at least some sizable portion of the US Republican Party. Like the renewable energy revolution that we will review a bit further on, Paris may someday save us, but likely not soon enough.
