Seedling mortality of metal hyperaccumulator plants resulting from damping off by Pythium spp. by Y. S. MAJID GHADERIAN; ANTHONY J. E. LYON; ALAN J. M. BAKER is a Agricultural and Biological Sciences article available to read on EtoBox.
What is Seedling mortality of metal hyperaccumulator plants resulting from damping off by Pythium spp. about?
Seedling mortality of __Alyssum serpyllifolium__ ssp. __lusitanicum__ and __A. murale__, both nickel hyperaccumulators, was reduced by increasing concentrations of metal within plant tissues when inoculated with the fungi __Pythium mamillatum__ or __P. ultimum__, both of which cause damping‐off disease of seedlings. __Pythium mamillatum__, isolated from nickel‐rich serpentine soil, was more tolerant of nickel than __P. ultimum__, isolated from low‐metal control soil, and was more pathogenic than __P. ultimum__ towards seedlings containing high concentrations of metal. These results support the hypothesis that metal hyperaccumulation by plants is closely linked to increased protection against disease.
