Samsung researchers developed a new 3-layer stacked CMOS image sensor architecture with the smallest ever reported pixel size of 0.5μm. The device uses copper-to-copper bonding between layers to precisely align pixels and reduce size and parasitic capacitance. This new design demonstrated an 85% reduction in random telegraph signal noise and 67% higher light conversion efficiency compared to earlier work.
