The Airbus A380 development required new aluminum alloys and fabrication capabilities. Airbus and Alcan formed integrated product teams to develop alloys and equipment for the large aircraft structures. Alcan invested in casting and plate production equipment capable of producing wing panels up to 36 meters long and heavy gauge parts like spars and ribs up to 425,000 mm^2 in cross-section. This enabled Alcan to provide over 50% of the aluminum for the A380, including all wing and fuselage structures.
